Smart Microfarms opened the first Northern California spirulina farm in Half Moon Bay in April 2016. We have a Certified Producer Certificate for the CA Farmers Market Program and currently sell in farmers markets in Marin, Oakland and Santa Cruz.

Spirulina Smart Microfarm.
Welcome to our Smart Microfarm greenhouse just south of San Francisco. The first spirulina farm in Northern California. Here we grow spirulina, a blue-green algae, year round, in a controlled environment greenhouse. Spirulina is harvested several times a week. The fresh harvest collects on a microscreen like a creamy yogurt. It can be frozen or dehydrated. We package and distribute SpiruSource® fresh harvest, fresh frozen, and low temperature dried crunchies and powder.

Smart Microfarms operated a research station in Richmond CA since 2012, and a spirulina microfarm testbed near Olympia WA since 2013. Products have been sold direct-to-consumer for market testing in Washington State, San Francisco Bay Area, Santa Cruz and Los Angeles.

Northern California Spirulina Microfarm

We produce an all-natural product in a controlled environment greenhouse, using no pesticides, no herbicides, no fungicides, no toxins of any kind. Our water source is Half Moon Bay city water, carbon filtered on site. We are growing a hydroponic crop, using water, not soil, so there is no impact on soil. Organic crop management and certification does not apply.   Dried spirulina powder, tablet and capsule supplements have been sold in health and natural food stores for 35 years. Many customers prefer fresh frozen spirulina to traditional dried spirulina. Fresh has almost no taste, and can be mixed with drinks and foods without changing the flavor. New fresh frozen spirulina appeals to locavores, fresh food and raw food consumers.
